Indonesia’s Coal Production Has Half the Target, Reached 346 Million Tons

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) noted that as of today, Wednesday (19/6/2024) domestic coal production has reached 346.79 million tons.

This means that before the first semester of 2024 ends, Indonesian coal production has reached almost half of this year’s target, to be precise around 48.84% of the annual production target set at 710 million tons.

Based on data from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources’ Minerba One Data Indonesia (MODI), from the realization of coal production, domestic absorption was recorded at 155.42 million tons. Meanwhile, the realization for exports amounted to 175.27 million tons.

This data will certainly continue to increase and be updated.
“Realization of coal production: 346.79 million tons,” based on MODI data from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, quoted on Wednesday (19/6/2024).
As is known, the government is targeting coal production in 2024 at 710 million tons.
Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Arifin Tasrif had revealed that Indonesia’s coal production continues to increase from year to year.
For 2023, coal production was recorded at 775 million tons, far exceeding the target of 695 million tons.

“So our production, for the realization of 2023, reached 775 million tons and for domestic needs (DMO) we can meet the needs of 213 million tons and then also export 518 million tons,” he explained during a press conference on the achievements of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources in 2023 some time ago.

Arifin said there was an increase in domestic coal utilization from the 2023 target of 177 million tons. This is due to the demand for more coal, due to additional new Steam Power Plants (PLTU) from the 35 GW projects that are being completed.
“The second cause is because the supply of other alternative energy is somewhat disrupted,” Arifin said.

As is known, Indonesia’s coal production has continued to increase since 2020, where in that year the production was 564 million tons with a DMO of 132 million tons and exports of 405 million tons. For 2021, coal production reached 614 million tons, with a DMO of 133 million tons and exports of 435 million tons.
In 2022, Indonesia’s coal production increased again at 687 million tons, with DMO supply of 216 million tons and exports reaching 465 million tons.

In fact, in the last 10 years, Indonesia’s coal production has increased significantly. Based on data from the Handbook of Energy and Economic Statistics of Indonesia 2023, in 2023 Indonesia was recorded to produce 775.18 million tons of coal, up 63% from 2013 which amounted to 474.37 million tons.

Likewise, the number of exports has continued to increase in this decade. Indonesia’s coal exports in 2023 were recorded at 518.04 million tons, an increase of 45% compared to exports in 2013 which amounted to 356.36 million tons.

There are at least 10 countries that have a high dependence on coal commodities from Indonesia.

The following is data on Indonesia’s coal exports in 2023:

  1. China: 218.207 million tons.
  2. India: 107.976 million tons.
  3. Japan: 25.603 million tons.
  4. South Korea: 25.955 million tons.
  5. Taiwan: 14.968 million tons.
  6. Hong Kong: 4.931 million tons.
  7. Malaysia: 28.109 million tons.
  8. Philippines: 36.083 million tons.
  9. Thailand: 11.736 million tons.
  10. Spain: 0 million tons
  11. Others: 44.476 million tons.
