European donors woo South Africa’s sceptical coal belt on green energy

European politicians and diplomats are holding talks with officials and trade unions in South Africa’s coal mining areas to convince them that the transition to renewable energy from fossil fuels will not impoverish them.

The aim of these discussions is to address the resistance from communities concerned about economic crises. The discussions, involving wealthy countries funding this transition, are taking place in Mpumalanga province.

Trade union leaders remain openly skeptical of speeches claiming that job losses can be offset by a boom in green energy.

Climate Transparency monitors have stated that due to its dependence on coal for electricity, Africa’s most advanced economy produces more greenhouse gases than the UK, France, or Italy.

David Martinon, France’s ambassador to South Africa, told delegates that the coal industry and its jobs are unsustainable. He also added that France will soon disburse a second loan.

Although employment in the coal sector exceeds 90,000 jobs, there are concerns about its impact on workers as the industry shifts to renewable energy. Collen Mahlangu, leader of the NUMSA trade union, emphasized the importance of real commitments to ensure no one is left behind in this process.

Meanwhile, Stine Leth Rasmussen from Denmark’s Energy Agency mentioned the Esbjerg port as a successful example of transitioning from oil to wind energy. She believes that South Africa could become a renewable energy leader in Africa and serve as an inspiration for other countries.
